Building upon workshops in Day 1 of the DWeb Summit, this workshop will kick off Day 2 with an exploration of core design criteria and principles for decentralized governance, using blockchain governance as a case study. We will engage in a thorough discussion of endogenous and exogenous mechanisms for the governance of each layer of the technology stack - from the internet, blockchain, and application layers  - and how these mechanisms can best interplay or hybridize to achieve decentralized governance goals. Can a technological artifact alone protect itself from centralization at the social /institutional layer by incorporating a particular design feature that makes it impossible, or at least harder to implement institutional centralization? Or do we need structures and/or institutions to protect a technology against institutional centralization (e.g. just like governmental intervention is required to protect the “free market” against oligarchic tendencies)?
