Since 2011 Iris Wuisman is Professor of Company Law at Leiden University and was formerly an entrepreneur and lawyer. She is interested in the broad area of company law, comparative law and European company law, given her active involvement in international education and research. Iris Wuisman is particularly interested in how entrepreneurship can be best facilitated with innovative legal forms. This means that she analyses societal developments and their influence on organizational governance structures and evaluates the possible fit or mismatch with company law rules. Currently, her research focuses on the (potential) influence of blockchain, new business models and developments in the labor market on collaboration and the future of business structures. She compares current governance systems and related legislation (legal strategies that deal with organizational governance) with governance structures that emergence on the blockchain and identifies how this could affect future company law. She also researches the use of Artificial Intelligence in the board room and how different types of AI fit with corporate rules on board structures, decision-making and liability of directors. Together with Rogier Wolf, she recently contributed to the Directors and Officers Liability Project of the European Centre of Tort and Insurance Law. In addition, Iris performs research into the field of liability aspects of partnerships and non-lawyer ownership. Iris established the Business & Liability Research Network (BLRN) together with her colleagues from the Company Law department and the department of Business Studies in January 2018. The launching conference of BLRN on ‘Business Resilience’ hosted several presentations and workshop on Technology & Company law. Iris is a member of COALA an international taskforce on blockchain, a board member of the Law Firm School, of the Association for Corporate Litigation and of the Foundation for the professional education of legal counsels.
